At the risk of duplicating the thhougts and efforts of many others, I would like to offer some observations and some suggestions for Shambhala's Business Model .The most reasonable, and perhaps the only way for Shambhala International to reach solid financial ground is to receive monthly payments from all the centers. We all know that there is no Shambhala without Shambhala International, and that when we join the local center we are becoming part of the greater mandala. It is the responsibility of all members, through their local centers, to financially support Shambhala International. The question is simply how to do this. I suggest that the easiest and most direct way is for Shambhala International to require every center to pay a percentage of its monthly gross income. All centers have expenses. All centers make monthly rent or mortgage payments. Shambhala International should simply be another expense that all centers must pay each month. Every center should send Shambhala International an income and expense statement every month. Whatever the gross income is on the statement, the center includes a check for a percentage of that amount. (Maybe 10% is a good place to start this discussion).I suspect that two problems will immediately arise.1. The centers will all scream that they can't afford that additional cost.2. The centers all have different ways of creating financial statements. So there is no uniformity or agreement on what constitutes expenses, income, etc.These two problems can be solved. I suggest that to begin with, Shambhala International needs to help all the centers standardize their monthly and annual financial statements. This requires an accountant who 1) sources the right accounting software that all centers should use, 2) writes a Standard Accounting Manual for Centers, and 3) works directly with each center (starting with the largest ones) to help them convert to the new software and the standard format.At the end of a year, at least the majority of larger centers should have made the conversion. As soon as a center begins producing proper financial statements, it can start writing check to Shambhala International. Of course, many centers will not feel that they can afford this cost. So the second job of our Shambhala accountant is to show each center what they can do to make this additional payment possible. Centers can raise dues. They can raise tuition fees. They can increase the number of members. They can fundraise. The Shambhala accountant can work with each center, by looking over their finances and suggesting ways to increase their income so as to support the additional payment to Shambhala International. In her video, Ms. Mandelker's comments about the current business model', were quite restrained. The truth is that the current business model' is ridiculous. Shambhala International cannot function this way. We must convert to a system where the many many centers support the middle of our mandala. Shambhala International should bite the bullet and hire a well qualified accountant to carry out this important work. Hi! I am a wife, a scrapbooker, a card maker, and a paper caretfr. I am a daughter, a sister, and a friend. I spend a lot of time volunteering at my church working with the teens, as well as directing the drama for 3 musicals this year for the adults! I teach a kindergarten Sunday School class, as well. I love kids, I have a degree in education, currently work in software, but hope to get my masters in special ed soon. Scrapbooking and stamping is my passion.*I would love to see you blog about how to save money and still maintain an active hobby! (They get expensive!)

Yeah, now that you mention it, I now ofllciaify think three of the Times columnists are total turds: Friedman (hack), Kristof (I prefer my sanctimonious guilt trips after breakfast, thank you), and Bob Everything Is a National Crisis, Facts Be Damned Herbert.I still think Dowd is hilarious. Gail Collins (she's new) has also written some really funny shit lately.

Daniel Day Lewis was given so much credit for his great vlaiiln in Gangs of New York. He was a great cartoon vlaiiln--straight out of Punch cartoons, except the meat cleaver was a bit over the top. I know it was a rough time, but I just didn't buy all that medieval weaponry flung about in NYC in the mid-1900s. Nah.Back to DDL & GONY. He was not a great actor in that film as we really think of great acting on the screen today. He was doing great acting as defined on the stage 150 yrs ago. And without that top hat, half the effect would have been lost.
