Adam opens the show talking about his experience testing a classic car at Willow Springs. He explains that it should have been a dream come true, but instead he spent the afternoon upset about the way his seat was set up. He also talks about the animated show table read he went to yesterday, and a hilarious George C. Scott / Adam Sandler mash-up video he saw.

Into the news with Alison, the top story is about the guy who tried to attack Rupert Murdoch with a shaving cream pie. It reminds Adam of Donny’s old habit of pushing pie into the faces of the girls who dumped him. The guys also chat about Kim Kardashian’s attempts to sue Old Navy for using her likeness in a commercial, the first semen sniffing dog, and why Danny McBride needs to be cast in every single comedy.

After the next segment of The Lotzi Tapes, Adam brings in actor Brendan Wayne. Brendan talks about the experience of filming Cowboys & Aliens, and what it was like to perform his own stunts. They also talk about his relation to his grandpa John Wayne, and his distant cousin, boxer Tommy Morrison.

Moving back to the news, the guys discuss the breakup of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. They also talk about kids being safer behind the wheel when driven by their grandmother, and some of the dangers of driving while texting. The next story is about New Zealand’s ban on weird baby names, and the show wraps with a discussion of Tiger Woods firing his caddy.

See Brendan in the new film Cowboys & Aliens, out Friday July 29th.

Adam opens the show talking to Ben about how gifted of a musician he is, and how ridiculous it is that so many of his great songs never get played on the radio. They also talk about the catharsis of both music and comedy, and Adam is reminded of the great lyrics in Ben’s songs. They listen to one of his favorites, ‘Selfless, Cold and Composed,’ and afterward listen to a series of terrible classic rock songs for Ben to play along with.

Adam then talks to Ben about growing up in North Carolina, and how old he was when he first discovered his passion for music. The guys also chat about why certain musicians have success over others, and they both agree that touring constantly is incredibly draining. Later they talk about some of the stories behind the music, including Ben having to call up an ex-girlfriend before ‘Brick’ hit the airwaves.

In the last part of the show, Adam and Ben jump to the phone lines to take your calls. The first caller wants to know what Ben thinks about music piracy’s impact on the industry. Another wants to know why Ben often writes songs from a third-person perspective. The guys also talk about the Ben Folds Five reunion concert, and Adam asks Ben if he’s ever considered writing a show for Broadway. As the show wraps up, the guys discuss some of the problems with self-criticism, and the best parts about performing live.

They talk about her struggle with addiction, how she lost over 100 pounds, and some of her on-and-off camera experiences on the show.

Jul 4, 2011

Adam sits down one-on-one to talk with Ken Burns about his latest documentary, ‘Baseball: The Tenth Inning.’ It’s a continuation of his previous Baseball documentary, and covers everything from 1992 to yesterday. Adam compliments Ken on several of his previous documentaries, and Ken talks about editing everything up until the last second. They also talk a bit about Mark Twain, and other documentaries they’ve enjoyed over the years.

Ken discusses growing up loving baseball, but realizing he knew very little about the sport. He says that he likes to look at each new project as an immersion into something new. He talks about his upcoming projects, including specials on the dustbowl era, prohibition, and the Vietnam war. Adam finds out more about the documentary process, and the guys talk about some of their favorite baseball moments. Ken says it’s crucial to tell a story when you make a documentary, and especially with baseball it has to be more than just statistics or who won.

After some discussion about the debilitating effects of steroids, Adam talks about his own career playing baseball in high school. This leads him into a story about filling in for Tommy Lasorda to be the Grand Marshall of Mardi Gras, and also an in depth comparison of baseball to softball.

Adam finds out more about a ‘normal day’ for Ken Burns, which seems to revolve around either being on the road promoting, or locked in an edit bay ‘trying to make something better out of the footage.’ Ken discusses how unique it is to have a series on PBS where you can have over two hours of uninterrupted content, and talks about how they raise money and research their topics. They also talk about some of the more complex themes that Ken has had to discuss over the years, and the ‘vow of poverty’ he took to become a documentarian.

One of Ken’s upcoming projects is about prohibition, but Ken says it’s really about right wing single issue campaigns that grow out of control. They talk about smear campaigns, and all the unintended consequences of prohibition; including organized crime, female alcoholism, and all sort of other social transformations. Ken also offers a reason for the world’s obsession with alcohol, and relates everything to escapism. Lastly, the guys discuss the sensitive subject of race issues here in America, and Adam is very impressed with Ken’s opinions and wealth of knowledge.
