Phil Rosenthal speaks to Adam about his love of Adam’s audiobook. Adam exchanges the love fest, and shares his enthusiasm for Phil’s latest project, ‘Exporting Raymond.’ The documentary follows Phil as he brings the successful series ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ to a Russian audience, and tries to deal with execs who have no idea what is or isn’t funny.
Of course Adam relates to dealing with unhelpful studio notes, and shares his own thoughts on the difference between a show that’s ‘nice’ versus ‘funny’. The guys also discuss the importance of actually caring about the characters you’re investing in, and why it’s better to be real instead of broad. Phil gives Adam advice to make the show he wants, regardless of notes, since it’s likely they’ll cancel it anyway.
Moving on, Adam asks Phil about the movie screenings that he does at his house, and Phil explains that the tradition goes back to his high school days, having friends over to watch HBO movies on TV. Adam tells a particularly embarrassing story from when he had to leave one of Phil’s screenings early, and Phil encourages Adam’s self esteem.
Toward the end of the podcast, the guys talk about the benefits to being nice as you make your way through the industry. Adam also talks about watching Pixar films with the kids, and jokes about his nanny interpreting the lyrics to La Cucaracha. As the show wraps up, things come full circle to making sitcoms, and Phil says you have to pick your battles. Adam thanks Phil for his time, and looks forward to the next movie night.

Adam is ready to rant, right from the top of the show. He’s doing some work for Dancing with the Stars again, and can’t understand how many times he has to have the same conversation with the same people. Adam and Dr. Drew also discuss how being from the 70s makes you like older cars, older architecture, and older pornos. There’s also an extended conversation about Evel Knievel and Candy Loving.
Adam has Dr. Drew count off all the different shows that Dr. Drew is involved in right now, and Dr. Drew also talks about his kids performing in Beauty and the Beast for school. Adam talks to Dr. Drew about his kids’ self esteem, and how you have to earn it, as well as respect. They bring in some cultural elements as well—how different races react to earning respect—and Adam says he will convince his kids that they are not blessed or lucky.
During a break, Donny came in to talk to Dr. Drew about his posture for the Ustream feed, and now Adam gives him a hard time for slouching. The guys reflect what they would do in their Loveline days when producers would give them notes, and rant about horrible decisions being made all around them.
Adam and Dr. Drew then jump to the phones and talk to a guy trying to get his wife to do anal again, even though it hurt her the first time. The guys also talk about Charlie Sheen’s stage career, and give their thoughts on online dating. The last caller is concerned about his ability to have children as he grows older, and Adam wraps the show debating with Dr. Drew about whether or not gay couples really can raise their kids the same way straight couples can.

Adam just returned from one of his fastest trips ever: a red eye to NY to record a segment for his upcoming show on the Speed Channel, then back to LA the same evening. He talks a bit about the experience, and also thanks everyone for supporting his audio book. So much support, in fact, that Adam is going back and recording more material. He goes on a huge rant about trying to negotiate the deal with his publishers, and tries to rationalize why he has to tell everyone how to do their jobs properly.
Adam also talks about the official release of Josh Gardner’s album, Mr. Stinkfinger. Adam discusses how hilarious Josh is, and laughs at a few sample tracks. Be sure to get the album on iTunes, out now.
In the news today, Charles Manson has spoken up about his views on Global Warming (Alison agrees with him). Also in the news, Tyler Perry and Spike Lee are in the midst of a war of words, and Adam wants to know why Oprah keeps supporting Perry. Adam opens the show discussing Morgan Spurlock’s latest documentary: Pom Wonderful Presents The Greatest Movie Ever Made. The movie is all about advertising and product placement, and Adam agrees that it’s distracting when you see a movie with a fake cereal or university name. The guys also talk about other documentaries that made them laugh, including Overnight and The Kid Stays in the Picture.
Adam talks to Morgan a bit more about his career, and the past 7 years since Super Size Me was released. Morgan discusses the inspiration for the doc, and the fast-tracked way in which they got the film to Sundance. They then jump back even earlier in Morgan’s career, and talk about working for free and pitching your ass off all for the small chance that you might get your break.
Adam and Morgan then discuss another project that Morgan is working on with Will Arnett and Jason Bateman about Male Grooming. The guys also talk about some of their favorite films, and go on a side jag about boring nature documentaries. The show wraps up with Adam and Morgan jumping onto the phone lines. They take calls about where Osama Bin Laden may be, when advertising crosses the line, and why certain companies resisted being in Morgan’s doc.

He talks about a haircut he got at a Mexican barbershop, and alludes to a fight he got into with his wife Lynette earlier in the day.
